Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Not only does it shield and cover everything within your body, but it also performs a variety of functions to keep your body running smoothly. These include controlling the amount of water in your body and preventing germs from entering. It helps to keep your body temperature stable, protects you from germs, and even aids in the production of vitamin D.

Even though acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, coming across  relevant acne information can be difficult. This lack of accuracy can make getting clearer skin more difficult, so let’s take a closer look at acne and how to successfully treat it.

Approx. 80% Of People Have Acne At Some Point In Their Lives

Did you know that acne is the most common skin disease in the United States? According to statistics from the American Academy of Dermatology (ADA), about 50 million Americans have acne at any given time. This can be very stressful for many people because it can negatively impact their self-image and confidence.

Since acne is a widespread issue, we thought it would be helpful for you to understand how prevalent it is by diving into some statistics.

3/4 People with Acne Are Between 12-24

Acne affects most people in their teens and early 20s. It is most common in teenagers and young adults but can affect people of all ages, races, and ethnicities.

More Than 85% Of 12-17-Year-Olds Are Affected By Acne.

Acne is common in teenagers. More than 85% of 12–17-year-olds are affected by acne. Acne affects both males and females, although females tend to suffer from it more often.

When it comes to acne, this skin condition can occur when dirt and oil clog up your pores, as it creates an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. This causes redness and swelling around the pimples – also called zits or blemishes – which you can see on your face or body. Acne isn’t caused by poor hygiene; it’s just one of those things that happens to some people more than others.

Disadvantages of Acne

2 out of 3 people who suffer from acne develop lifelong scars.

Acne scars are one of the most common skin conditions, and two out of three people who suffer from acne go on to develop some form of scarring. Acne scars can be emotional and embarrassing, but physical scars can also cause pain, which only adds to the problem. The scarring that follows an acne outbreak can last many years and is often permanent if left untreated.

The most common type of acne scarring is an ice pick or depressed or deep boxcar scar: small, indented depressions in your skin that look like tiny wounds, surrounded by redness. These types of cysts tend to occur when a big clog in an oil gland has ruptured into deeper layers of skin due to pressure building up underneath it. For instance, think about popping a pimple that’s already formed and how much more painful this is than squeezing one that hasn’t fully formed.

Causes of Acne

Chocolate, nuts, or greasy foods do not cause acne. Although a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle will help you manage your acne, the root cause is often hormonal.

The primary causes of acne are:

  • A build-up of oil and dead skin cells (called keratin), which blocks pores on the skin’s surface and allows bacteria to thrive in these blocked pores. This causes inflammation which leads to further breakouts as it irritates the skin.
  • Bacteria on our skin produce an enzyme called lipase, which breaks down fats into fatty acids that irritate nearby cells, causing them to multiply rapidly, leading to pimples!
  • A variety of factors cause acne. Bacteria are the primary culprits, but stress, hormones, diet, and genetics can also affect your skin’s appearance.
  • Some medications can cause acne as a side effect (though this is less common than you might think). If you’re taking any medication that causes your pimples to worsen, you should talk with your doctor about switching brands or discontinuing use.
